Quantitative (Q) Course Advising Contours
A sample "advising contour" is presented here.
As can be seen, the "advising contour" is a family of line plots showing
the "estimated probability of success, p" in a Q-course as a function of
SAT1 Math and High School Class Rank percentile information for p = 0.1 to 0.9 in steps of 0.1.
By locating the spot on the "advising contour" where a student's SAT1 Math
and high school class rank values intersect, the estimated probability of
achieving success (defined as a grade of C or better) in the Q-course based
on historical data on student performance in that course may be determined.
|
Consider the example in which we suppose that the student has a SAT1 Math score of 580
and a high school class rank of 76.
Here we see that the student falls in a spot on
the "advising contour" plot in an area between the lines corresponding
to p=0.7 to p=0.8 which means that the likelihood of achieving success
(as measured by a grade of C or above) is expected to be between 70% and 80%.
Based on this it would seem likely that the student would enroll in the course
if needed rather than consider strengthening his/her quantitative skills prior
to enrolling in the Q-course.

|
In case you do not know your High School Class Rank information, "advising contours"
are also provided using the SAT1 Math score alone.
|
Again, consider the example in which we suppose that the student has a SAT1 Math score of 580.
In a similar fashion, using information on a student's SAT1 Math score only,
we again see that the student falls in a spot on the "advising contour" in
an area between the lines corresponding to p=0.7 to p=0.8, which
represents the estimated 70%-80% likelihood of achieving success in that course,
based on historical data on student performance.
Thus, again we see that the likelihood of achieving success
(as measured by a grade of C or above)
is expected to be 70-80%.
